Please log on to .....

This is a fun website where you can practice your vocabulary words for our upcoming tests! Play games, print flashcards, take pretests! I have also uploaded lessons that feature tough high school leveled vocabulary words that you might find on the SAT or the PARCC. In addition, there are lists that feature multiple meaning words so that you can keep your context clues skills sharp. This website is also an app that you can download from i tunes. That way you can practice your vocabulary on the go! I know that you always have your phones with you!

Extra credit will be given to students who score well on the on-line vocabulary tests. Please remember to take the practice tests first!  I am going to give you your user names and passwords tomorrow!  Be good and take advantage of this cool website!

The Lizzie Borden Argument Essay

The graphic organizer and the rough draft for this project is now overdue. The final draft of this essay is due Friday for A week and period 5. The final draft of the essay is due for F week on November 1st. Please give everything to me ASAP. It would be a good idea to get a pass and visit me during advisory time in order to hand everything in to me.

Please read the rubric attached to the common task carefully. Remember that your essay needs to have both evidence and counter evidence. It also has to be in MLA format with a work cited page. Please use the app easybib to make these citations. As everyone has read the play in class, I have made the citation for the play for you. I will give this to you in class tomorrow.

Be a reading detective! Use context clues!

Context Clues are important! Above is a copy of a handout that I placed in your purple homework folder last month. Please review these six types of context clues. This week in class, we are going to practice using context clues in daily warm-up activities. For homework this week, you need to view the slide show below and answer the questions asked in it. I will provide you with the worksheet that you will need to fill in tomorrow.

Lizzie Borden Common Task

Welcome to my blog! Our first common task is an argument essay, “Is Lizzie Borden Innocent or Guilty?” The murder of Lizzie Borden’s parents has puzzled society for over 125 years! Perhaps you can crack the case!

I have given you all a hard copy of the directions to this common task. Attached to the directions that I gave you was a graphic organizer and a Common Core aligned argument essay rubric. I have also given many of you a copy of the play, “She Took an Axe”, that we read in class. If you are missing any of these materials, please let me know and I will give you a hard copy of what you need so that you can do this assignment.

Much of the information that you need to complete this assignment is in the play “She Took an Axe”. However, I encourage you to utilize the links below to gather the evidence that you need to support your claim. Remember, you need to claim, or decide, if Lizzie is guilty or innocent.

Once you have explored these websites, please venture out and find new Lizzie Borden related websites on your own. If you find something really interesting, please write down the web address so that I can add it to this blog. Your efforts will be rewarded with Davies Dollars!

If you need any help with this assignment, please know that I will stay after school to help you on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays until 3:30. There is a late bus that will take you home. You will have time to work on this in class when you or your group is assigned to work at the computer station. However, please keep in mind that the project is due on October 18th so you may want to do the research at home and the writing in class.
